Morris Fuller Benton est un grand nom de l'histoire de la typographie américaine pourtant très peu connu du grand public. Entre 1897 et 1937, il produit en 40 années de carrière plus de 200 typographies pour l'une des plus grandes fonderies de caractères des Etats-Unis, l'American Type Founders Company (ATF). Issue du regroupement de fonderies américaines, l'ATF est le fruit d'un travail collectif orchestré par des hommes de convictions, visionnaires et profondément passionnés par l'art de la typographie et de la fonderie de caractères.
Morris Fuller Benton a participé, avec son père Linn Boyd Benton, a une très belle aventure humaine et technologique qui a durablement remodelé la production typographique en ce début de XXe siècle. Dignes héritiers de Gutenberg, ils ont contribué, avec l'invention du pantographe vertical, à la création de poinçons et de matrices de qualité, produisant un grand nombre de caractères qui sont considérés comme des références en terme d’esthétisme et de fonctionnalité : ils sont aujourd'hui devenus de grands classiques que nous retrouvons régulièrement en édition, dans les journaux ou dans les magazines.
L'héritage des Benton nous est parvenu intact, sauvegardé désormais dans des musées américains ou dans des collections privées. Leurs réalisations suscitent toujours autant d’intérêts et de curiosités parmi les passionnés et professionnels des industries graphiques.

Morris Fuller Benton is a great name in the history of American typography, yet he is little known to the general public. Between 1897 and 1937, over a 40-year career, he produced more than 200 typefaces for one of the largest type foundries in the United States, the American Type Founders Company (ATF). The result of a grouping of American type foundries, ATF is the fruit of a collective effort orchestrated by men of conviction, vision and deep passion for the art of typography and type foundry. Morris Fuller Benton, along with his father Linn Boyd Benton, took part in a wonderful human and technological adventure that durably reshaped typographic production at the beginning of the 20th century.
